Are You Ever Coming Home?
I think a casual listen would result in this being thought of as another unrequited love song, the young hero pining for a love that has left and will not return. Actually, it’s more of a coming of age type song. The hero is coming to terms with self-imposed limitations, the shackles of shame-filled memories, etc., and gaining insight into what they really want their life to be. It's about gaining wisdom and a little bit of perspective.
I could live in any country
It’s all too serious for me
Make my living building something
Are you ever coming home?
Are you ever coming home?
And I could dream up all these places
The differences between the leaves
In all the subtle ways she changes
Are you ever coming home?
Are you ever coming home?
I say never
I’ve tripped the laughter and the high times
I’ve broken every friend I need
I’ve poured the last out to my conscience
Are you ever coming home?
Are you ever coming home?
Are you ever coming home?
